Research is ongoing at SUNY ESF in the hopes of creating a strain of
American Chestnut that will be disease resistant. See
http://www.esf.edu/chestnut/  Dr Powell is apparently also working on the
American Elm: http://www.esf.edu/efb/powell/research.html#elm

There was an article on the Syracuse Post-Standard not long ago about the
work at ESF. It may be archived at syracuse.com, but I haven't checked.
