I use Farmer Boy and have for some years in my NYS history and Pre-industrial NYS courses at the college of St. Rose in Albany. I also recommend Walter D. Edmund's Rome Haul, about the building of the Erie Canal. I also like Bruce Lancaster's Guns of Burgoyne, written from the point of view of a Hessian artillery officer in Burgoyne's army.

Laura Ingalls Wilder's "Farmer Boy" is not only full of information about 19th-century farm life but also takes place a few miles from you, outside Malone.

Folks--

I have been hired to teach a one-semester New York State history course at
the university level for this coming fall term. In hopes of offering
students a variety of sources from which to work, I'm looking for teachable
novels about the state, but preferably ones that are not solely about New
York City. Any suggestions?
