As a working historian, I find maddening the trend to film and discard hard copies of early serials and newspapers.  The New York Society Library, established in 1754, has significant hard copy runs of early serials and, especially, early newspapers - like the New York Evening Post (1804-1929).  Although a private library supported by subscribers, the library is open for in person reference by members of the public - their website www.nysoclib.org has details.

The list below contains a fairly complete list of the serials held by the library, but not the newspapers, which are not yet fully catalogued.
