The railroads that carried fluid milk to NYC and elsewhere
often ran their own ice harvesting operations. The O&W, for
example, cut ice on Leland Pond (just off Route 20 at Pine Woods) and
stored it there for its milk trains which ended up in Weehawken,
NJ.
They still cut ice up at Inlet every February.
