19th century Newspapers (available on microfilm) in the local activities columns, mention Ice Harvesting - or the lack there of - in winter/spring issues almost every year. It is a very common topic in "Local Brevities" columns as ice was an im- portant commodity. References to ICE harvesting, ICE Houses, are found in an Index to selected years of our local newspaper starting in 1872. It is predictable that they will be found in most commun- ity newspapers. Many locally produced "Histories" talk about the subject and often contain photographs. Leigh Leigh C.
