"A Picture of New-York in 1852..... (New York: C.S. Francis & Co. (copyright 1845), lists Trinity Church, built in 1841-45, as the tallest building in the city, with a height of 264 feet (p. 122); second tallest is St. John's Chapel, built 1807, with a height of 214 feet 6 inches (p. 126). The Trinity Church of 1841-45, of course, replaced one built in 1788 (and of the same dimensions as that of 1696 as expanded in 1735), which was demolished in 1839 -- this source does not give the height of the 1788 church.
