Simeon DeWitt was Surveyor General of New York and as such laid out much of the geopolitical landscape of New York State, giving the new towns names from classical antiquity like "Tully", "Marcellus" or "Ithaca". He was also a city surveyor - a job now the city engineer, in Albany, New York, and while there produced a much-used and widely reproduced map of the city.In a slightly earlier

Greetings: We are searching for information regarding Simeon DeWitt, a surveyor circa 1802-1814, who worked in Western New York. In particular, we are interested in obtaining information about other jobs and titles Mr. DeWitt held. We have one reference which states he was "the General of New York". ??
We are also searching for information regarding Strawberry Island, located in the Niagara River, Erie County, New York.
