Region 6 of the NY Department of Transportation has funding to erect four new historic markers in rest areas in the Southern Tier region. They have asked for suggestions as to the text for these.

In the past, rest area markers have been those large panels seen at Thruway Rest Areas, among others, carrying a fair amount of text with a regional, rather than site-specific, slant. But they are expensive. While DOT is willing to consider larger text of a regional nature, they had in mind the smaller, post-mounted markers.

The problem is that the small markers usually identify a single site right at the marker location, and so the limited text works fairly well. For a rest area, where the intent is to be more general, this may be hard to accomplish in a few lines.

The locations are:
#1 Route 14, Town of Reading, Schuyler County, about ½ mile north of Watkins Glen on the west side of Seneca Lake.
#2 Route 54A, Town of Jerusalem, Yates County, at the north edge of Keuka Lake State Park on the east side of the west fork of Keuka Lake.
#3 Route I-390, Town of Cohocton, Steuben County, about 1.5 miles south of Cohocton.
#4 STE Route 17, Town of Hornellsville, Steuben County, about 2 miles northeast of Almond.
