I am grateful to you for this information. I had been led to believe that in
1827 earlier legislation took effect that freed all remaining slaves in New
York State. Evidently my informant, whom I took to be an expert in slavery law,
gave me an incomplete picture.
I have already looked at the numbers in the 1820 and 1830 censuses and presumed
that slaves shown for 1830 came from other states.
