Schuylerville >> As a youngster, Lorraine Petralia used to run up and
down the Saratoga Monument as a way to have fun, totally unaware of
its historical significance.
The structure was built to remember the 1777 Battles of Saratoga, a
major turning point of the Revolutionary War.
Now, such things mean a great deal to Petralia, especially when
watching her grandson, Lucas Woodcock, learn about them, too. They
were among the people who turned out Thursday for a “Sword Surrender”
ceremony at Fort Hardy Park, on the same ground where British General
John Burgoyne’s army laid down its arms 236 years ago after suffering
a humiliating defeat at the hands of American patriots.
