Harbor at the Headwaters of Prosperity: Albany's 18th Century Stockade
and Waterfront

New York State Library
Librarians Room
Cultural Education Center (7th floor)
Wednesday, March 22nd, 12:15-1:15 p.m.

Public Program - bring your lunch

Christopher Kilkenny, Project Director at Hartgen Archeological
Associates, Inc., will discuss excavations at the State University
Construction Fund Archeological Site in downtown Albany. Remnants of a
1750's stockade, fascinating artifacts, and the remains of the
city's earliest waterfront expansions in the late 1700's were
uncovered. The archeology of this single city block represents
widespread changes that are central to the history of New York including
Albany's transition from a strategic military staging point to a
central shipping point along the Erie Canal and the corresponding change
in the surrounding region from a military frontier to a prosperous trade
corridor.
