The 50-year diary of an upstate New York woman who taught in one-room schools both before
and after her marriage is the subject of “When the Trains ran,” a topical guide to its contents.
Over 70 pages depict the life of a country town during the years of frequent railroad service under
headings such as “Employment” (women and men), “Health and Illness,” “Transportation,” “A
Teacher’s Life,” and others. They are supplemented by a similar number of illustrations, including
reproductions of documents pertaining to rural schools of the 1870s and 1880s. The years
covered are 1877 to 1928, and exact date references are included. Readable on both PC and Mac,
the CD is available from the Delaware County Historical Association, 46549 Route 10, Delhi, NY
13753, <[log in to unmask]>, 607.746.3849.
