The following is a brief summary of an obituary of Dr. Milton M. Klein, posted on H-LAW by Richard B. Bernstein, with a concluding comment.

Milton M. Klein, an authority on the history of New York and of early American law, died on June 10, 2004. Born in New York City in 1917, Dr. Klein was for many years a member of the history faculty at the University of Tennessee (Knoxville). He was a longtime member and past president of the American Society for Legal History. He received degrees from the City College of New York and Columbia University (PhD 1954), where he studied with Richard Morris. Dr. Klein held posts at Columbia, Long Island University, and SUNY College at Fredonia prior to joining the faculty of the University of Tennessee.

Among Dr. Klein's many publications are The Independent Reflector ... by William Livingston and Others (ed., 1963), The Politics of Diversity: Essays in the History of Colonial New York (1974), New York in the American Revolution: A Bibliography (comp., 1974), Courts and Law in Early New York: Selected Essays (ed., 1978), The American Whig: William Livingston of New York (1993), and The Empire State: A History of New York (ed., 2001).

Dr. Milton M. Klein was a longtime subscriber and occasional contributor to NYHIST-L.
