     My book, for Alfred Knopf, is about the
famous  boxing matches between Joe Louis and Max
Schmeling in June 1936 and June 1938. Schmeling,
the German former heavyweight champion of the
world, trained in upstate New York for both
fights: in NAPANOCH (at the Napanoch Country Club)
in 1936 and SPECULATOR (in the Adirondacks) in
1938. These training camps were popular
destinations; thousands of boxing buffs would come
to watch sparring matches in the weeks before the
fights themselves, which were held at Yankee Stadium.
I'm looking for anyone who remembers the camps or
can suggest people and/or sources that might be
helpful: newspapers, diaries, etc. If you could
post this note on an appropriate historical
bulletin board, that would be great, too.
