As a research intern at the encyclopedia project, I have been working all
semester long on tables that will accompany county entries. The purpose of
these tables is to supplement the articles with statistical information
about population and demographics. The information that I have gathered
dates back to 1790 and forward through 2000.
It has been somewhat difficult to collect consistent information because the
questions asked and the information available in federal censuses has varied
over the years. One of the tables that will be printed in the encyclopedia
requires the number of children of foreign born for each county. I have
been unable to find this information for the years 1880, 1940, and 1950.
The place of birth of parents was asked on each of these census forms,
however, I have not found the information published on the county level. In
1940 and 1950 this was only asked of a sample population and the results
were published in special reports, but the tables printed in these reports
are on the national, state, or city level.
Any help in finding this missing data would be greatly appreciated and an
important contribution to the encyclopedia project.

Thank you,
Rachel Rubin
