I was in Frankfurt in 1962 and stopped at a street vendor where I bought a wurst in a situation as close to a hot dog stand as you could get. It was thinner than a US hotdog but was served in a small split roll about half the length of the wurst. My guess is that this 1962 German wurst and our hotdog have a common German ancestor, but it would take a genealogist of meat to do the family tree.

As the "Hot Dog" is actually a frankfurter, my guess would be that it came
from Frankfurt, Germany. All of the wursts were sold in German Butcher
Shops, here in NY, mainly Brooklyn. Of course, whoever decided to put it in
a roll and smear mustard on it, should be given the credit, I guess :-)
