Military Historian
The New York State Museum, Albany, NY seeks applicants for a permanent curatorial and research position in military history.
Location: Albany, NY.
Duties:
(1) curatorial responsibility for the Museum's military history collection. Responsibility for other areas of the Museum's history collection (e.g., numismatics, stamps, medicine) may also be assigned;
(2) initiates and conducts and publishes the results of independent collections-based research in the military history of New York State, with a primary focus on the pre-Civil War period. Modest in-house funding is available, but funding for the program will be sought by the incumbent through competitive grants and other outside sources;
(3) responsible for coordinating the annual Conference on New York State History. The incumbent will work with the current coordinator for the 2001 conference and thereafter will have sole responsibility;
(4) contributes to the Museum's exhibit development and public programs.
Requirements: M.A. (Ph.D. preferred) in history with a focus on American military history; demonstrated experience in the care and management of military history collections; record of collections-based military history research and peer-reviewed publications; record of participating in regional historical conferences including presentation of research papers and organization of symposia.
Starting salary: $35,945. Position requires a Civil Service training and experience examination.
