August 13-November 20, 2000
Sunday, August 13, 2000: VILLAGE GREEN WALKING TOUR at 2:00 P.M., an
hour-long exploration of the architecture, environment, and rich history
of Setauket's original settlement area, led by members of the Three
Village Historical Society. Architecture, historical background, and
natural beauty are combined into an hour-long introduction to Setauket as
the first settlement of the Town of Brookhaven and the center for town
government until the end of the Revolutionary War. Historical details
span the years from the Native American occupation of Long Island's north
shore, thousands of years before the first Anglo-American settlers arrived
in 1655, to suburbanization in the 1960s. The tours are highly
recommended for long-time residents, new residents, and visitors. The
walking tours are open to the public for a fee of $2.00 per person; free
to members of the Society. No preregistration is necessary; gather on the
Setauket Neighborhood House lawn, 95 Main Street opposite the Mill Pond.

Monday, September 18, 2000: DR. RICHARD HAMM will present THE PROSECUTOR
AND THE SHOWGIRL: A NEW YORK STORY, about the sensational "Crime of the
Century" on June 25, 1906, when Harry Thaw shot and killed famed architect
Stanford White to avenge White's alleged "corruption" of Thaw's wife, the
showgirl Evelyn Nesbitt. The program, which is free and open to the
public, is supported in part by the New York Council for the Humanities.

ages 6-8 and their families presented by the Three Village Historical
Society. On this 19th century neighborhood stroll, we discover the

Saturday, Oct. 14, 2000: I SPY! Children become part of George
Washington's famous Setauket Spy Ring in this one-hour fun-filled Three
Village Historical Society workshop at TVHS headquarters, 93 North Country
Road, Setauket. Travel back in time to experience an exciting period in
Setauket's history. Through movement and drama, young time travellers
will become part of the Setauket Spy Adventure. Make something to take
home and do a little spying of your own! We will be outside, so dress
accordingly. A parent or other adult must remain on the premises. Times:
Ages 3-4, 10:00-11:00 A.M.; Ages 5-6, 11:30 A.M.-12:30 P.M. Fee.

title of a presentation by Robert W. Kenny, professor emeritus of history
at George Washington University, an artist, and a vice president of the

Saturday, October 21, 2000 : By Popular Demand: A SPECIAL SPIRITS OF THE
THREE VILLAGES CEMETERY TOUR for children, ages 7-12, and their families.
At the invitation of the Three Village Historical Society, personages
buried in historic local graveyards will come to life, telling stories
about themselves and early days on Long Island. Children will meet and
role play with historical figures portrayed by local residents in this
fun-filled and educational program. Fee. Advance purchase, reservations,

Saturday, October 21, 2000 : SPIRITS OF THE THREE VILLAGES CEMETERY TOUR
(rain date October 28th ) At the invitation of the Three Village
Historical Society, personages buried in historic local graveyards will
come to life at sundown, telling stories about themselves and early days
on Long Island. Tours leave every fifteen minutes from the Setauket
Presbyterian Church's parking lot on Caroline Avenue, beginning at 5:30
PM. Last tour leaves at 8:30 PM. With final story and complimentary
refreshments, allow one-and-a-half hours. Open to all over the age of

October 28, 2000: Rain Date, SPIRITS OF THE THREE VILLAGES CEMETERY TOUR.

for the Three Village Historical Society's educators and Suffolk County
teachers to meet and learn about topics based on our collections and

Monday, November 20, 2000: J. LANCE MALLAMO, Executive Director of the
Vanderbilt Museum, will speak about the LONG ISLAND HERITAGE TRAIL,
defined by what was formerly known as "Knight's Highway," now Route 25A.
This region of the Island retains the character of years gone by, and much
has been preserved that dates back to colonial times, the Revolutionary
War era, and the earliest days of the nation when President George
Washington traveled here in 1790. TICKETS TO THE 22ND ANNUAL CANDLELIGHT
HOUSE TOUR on December 1st and 2nd will be available for pickup by members
