I would recommend the NYC Municipal Archives, they have many of the records of the Ports Dept. Also the NY County Archives.

Is Castle William the same place as Castle Garden, the immigrant arrival port
opened in 1856?

What is a good source for photos of New York Harbor in 1847?

Is there a description of what an immigrant would do one he/she got off the
boat in New York to get to the Hudson River Steamboat Co. to go to
Albany?--again in 1847?

I am going to be in NY City in February and plan to go to the NY Public
Library to do some research on immigrant arrival in the period of 1847-1865.
Any suggestions on the best way to do this. I have not been to the library
before.

Any and all help appreciated.
