George R Stewart (A Concise Dictionary of American Place-Names, Oxford 1970)
says "probably by folk-etymology from Dutch _steenig-raapje_, `stony-turnip-
field.'  Cf Turnip Patch Point, Delaware, which is also in Dutch territory."
