David:
During the summer of 1965, I worked for the Children's Aid Society at the
Hester Street Center on Hester Street. That was to be it's last year of
existence, and I believe it was torn down shortly thereafter (supposedly for
the planned but not built expressway in that area--proposed by Robert
Moses)..There may be some reference about the church you are seeking in
regard to the Hester Street Center and the CAS/NYC--as this center was
created probably in the late 1800's.
Good luck!

Subject: Bowery Church

The 1887 book _Our Fireman_ by A. E. Costello mentions an 1824 Independence
Day fireman's parade that went from Hospital Green to the Bowery Church. I
find the the first location was the front yard of a hospital on Broadway
between Anthony and Duane streets, but Bowery Church has me stumped. It
doesn't seem to refer to St. Mark's in the Bowery, There's mention
elsewhere of a Bowery Church between Hester and Walker streets. Could this
be the one and, if so, where exactly was it sited and did it have a name
other than just the Bowery Church?

Any and all help appreciated.

David
