I am chairperson for a committee to restore our Lady of Justice that we
recently took down from the courthouse here in Coudersport,Pa. She is very
rare-unblindfolded, and apparently was purchased from a firm in 1888 by the
name of Humphrey and Jones,Jamestown,N.Y. I found an engraving or drawing
of an exact duplicate of ours from a photo supply house in New York City
and learned that she came in three sizes-6-8- and 10 feet high. I can't
find any more info on the Jamestown firm because they went out of business
around 1906-1908. Could you help in any way to do some research for me??
When we brought her off her 150 tower, we had the History Channel here
filming it for later broadcast. It would be wonderful to be able to
finally fit all the pieces together about her history. Another interesting
part of her history is that when we shipped her to Erie to start the
restoration process, they removed her base and a solid gold cross fell out
from the sealed interior. Inscribed on the back of the cross/crusifix it
says 1884-Aug., toCHR love HMM. We would love to find out why it was put
inside the statue. perhaps the artist used his wife or girlfriend as the
model for the face. I'm sending scanned pix of the original and the one
that was atop our courthouse. PLease notify me when you get this e-mail
and if you can help us. Shirlee Leete, chairperson, 502 Maple St.
