Dear Jim,
Yes, at least in the northern tier. In Franklin County between 1945 and
1970, half of the farm land (1 million out of 2 million) went out of
cultivation. While a small amount was converted to other used, the vast
majority reverted to forest land. In general, this was the poorest and/or
most isolated farm land. The Census of Agriculture documents this
conversion.
