I don't have my copy at hand but Milton Hamilton's The Country Printer: New
York State, 1785-1830 might have a hint or two. It's a fascinating book.

Subject: 19C Ithaca Journalism

York-Staters,

I have a question about early 19th Century newspapers in the Ithaca area.
Quoting from French's Gazeteer -

"The Seneca Republican, the first paper published in the county. was started
at
Ithaca, July 4, 1815, by Jonathan Ingersoll. In 1816 it was changed to The
Ithaca Journal, and in 1817 Mack & Shepherd became proprietors. It was
successively issued by Mack & Searing, Ebenezer Mack, and Mack & Morgan,
until 1824, when Wm. Andrus became partner, and the paper was issued by Mack
& Andrus In 1827 the name was changed to Ithaca Journal, Literary Gazette,
and General Advertiser, and about a year afterward a portion of the title
was dropped, and it was issued as The Ithaca Journal and Advertiser. In Dec.
1833, Mack & Andrus sold to Nathan Randall..."

It's not clear to me from this just how many Macks we're talking about. Was
it just Ebenezer, or were there otherfamily members involved? Any Mack
descendents still in the area? Any first names available for Shepherd,
Searing, or Morgan?

Any information or pointers appreciated.
