How does one measure the geographic center, I wonder? Search the web
for "geographic center of new york state" or "geographical center of new
york state" and you'll get a number of hits, of which just a few follow
here:

"The geographic center of New York State is located in Madison County,
approximately 12 miles south of Oneida and 26 miles southwest of Utica."
http://www.iloveny.com/info_center/state_facts_geo.asp

"Pratt's Hollow, one of our smaller hamlets, is considered to be the
geographic center of New York State." http://www.madisoncountyny.com/gov/

"Pratt's Hollow, in the Town of Eaton, is considered to be the
geographic center of New York State."
http://www.madisoncounty.org/mcbrief.html

Other places in New York that appear to claim to be the geographic(al)
center are: Cortland, Leonardsville, Oneida Castle, Rome, Syracuse,
Utica. E.g., "Step in to one of Dawn's two large parlors [in Governor's
House Bed and Breakfast Inn in Oneida Castle, New York] and you will be
standing at the geographic center of New York State. An inlaid star
marks the spot!"

There's an interesting article here about determining geographic centers
(you'll have to scroll down): http://www-

Claims to the center of the US:

"Rugby, ND, which is the geographical center of the North American
continent. There is a monument that describes the location."
http://wills-domain.com/4corner_day3.html
Belleville,
Lebanon KS

"geographic center of United States (incl. Alaska and Hawaii), west of
Castle Rock, S.D., 44°58' lat., 103°46' W long."

"Smith Center [KS] is just a few miles from the geographic center of
United States, excluding Alaska and Hawaii, according to Rand McNally"

marker (where?) indicating the geographical center of the US

another monument (somewhere else) indicating the geographical center of
the US http://www.snobhill.net/postcard/us/ks/ks102.htm
