I thought that there might be people on this list who might wish to
know about the death of Vaugh Ward, wife of George. Her obituary
appeared in The Saratogian of Saratoga Springs on 11 Dec 2001.
She and her husband George are widely known for their many
activities, especially in history circles. The obituary is a bit lengthy
so I will eliminate the personal comments of several people in the
following. Contact Janet Yeates via e-mail at <[log in to unmask]>
with questions or to send a tribute in advance for the memory book.

ARTIST VAUGH WARD DIES AT 62

Rexford, NY - Friend, leader, artist, musician, organizer, promoter
and folklorist Vaugh Ward died of cancer at the age of 62 on Friday,
Dec. 7 at Albany Medical Center, surrounded by family including
husband George and sons Pete and Nathaniel.

The local arts community and beyond mourned the loss of a spirited
supporter and vocal spokesperson for Adirondack culture and
livelihood. Ward was a founding member of Caffe Lena Inc. and
current member of the board of directors.

Ward was a supporter of Caffe Lena, the Eighth Step Coffee House
and others. She taught high school English and organized with her
students the first Niskayuna Festival that grew to Nisky Day. She
was a staff folklorist for the Lower Adirondack Regional Arts
Council and organized the Adirondack Liar's Club in 1986. She
founded the Black Crow Network to support the "tradition-bearers"
and those with an interest in interpreting the history of the Mohawk-
Champlain region and eastern Adirondacks.

A memorial ceremony will be held at 2pm Sunday, Dec. 16th
at the Glenridge Grange, Pashley Road, Glenville. According to
organizers, Vaugh's wish was for a warm gathering of friends
spontaneously sharing stories, anecdotes, music and food. A
memory book will be available for photos and messages.

Ward was a longtime member and promoter of the International
Women's Writing Guild, which assembles on the Skidmore College
Campus every summer and celebrates its 25th anniversary this
August..

God Bless
Ruth Ann Messick
