The Hofstra Museum has an exhibition, "Nassau County at 100: The Past and
Present in Photographs" in commemoration of the centennial of Nassau County.
Twenty-five turn-of-the-century archival photographs are paired with
contemporary color photographs of the same sites by guest curator Linda B.
Martin. The exhibition is in the Lowenfeld Exhibition Hall on the 10th floor
of the Axinn Library of Hofstra University in Hempstead, Long Island, NY.
Accompanying the exhibition is an exhibit catalog which reproduces all of the
photographs in the exhibit in black-and-white plus a dozen additional archival
photographs. The 48-pg catalog is available at the exhibition or from the Long
Island Studies Institute, Hofstra University-West Campus, 619 Fulton Avenue,
Hempstead, NY 11549 ($8); 516-463-6411 or fax 516-463-6441.
The three eastern towns of Queens organized Nassau County in 1899 after
the three western towns had joined greater New York City in 1898. Hofstra will
be holding a three-day centennial conference, Nassau County: Rural Hinterland
to Suburban Metropolis on March 18-20. For information on the conference
program (available mid-Feb), contact the Hofstra Cultural Center, 200 Hofstra
University, Hempstead, NY 11549-2000; tel. 516-463-5669; fax 516-463-4792.
