Two more people born in New York--I believe in the vicinity of Bath. In this case they found their fame within the state.

Maggie Fox (1833?-1893)
Katie Fox (1836?-1892)

These two sisters, then living in Hydesville hamlet (Arcadia town, Wayne Co), reported communicating with a dead man by means of "rappings" on March 31, 1848. This and subsequent communications in Rochester and New York City sparked the 19th-century Spiritualist movement. (Their devotees included Horace Greeley and Arthur Conan Doyle.) Alas, the other religion that the county contributed to--Mormonism--was started by someone born in Vermont.

Someone from the other end of the state who found fame after moving away was Colin Powell (born in Harlem, raised in the South Bronx).
