Dear Sir/Madam: As a member of a list dealing with the Revolutionary
War, I recently reveiwed a posting re: the discovery of a "shield"
somewhere on Long Island that family history associated with Lord
Cornwallis. The accompanying photograph appears to be not a shield,
but a cast iron fireback with the British Arms, used to reflect heat
out from a fire and protect the back of a fireplace. The Mercer
Museum, in Doylestown, PA, has an extensive collection of firebacks,
and you may wish to contact them as to details that may assist in
dating the piece.

Sincerely,
Thad Weaver
