HERKIMER — The yard at the Herkimer County Historical Society was the
site of an archaeological dig during the summer.

Now some of the artifacts unearthed during that dig are on display.

The historical society has opened a new exhibit in its Suiter Mansion
on the village of Herkimer’s Historic Four Corners featuring some of
the artifacts.

While the dig started out as a search for Fort Dayton, most of the
findings were from Dr. A. Walter Suiter’s medical practice and
included medicine bottles and medical instruments, according to
historical society Executive Director Susan Perkins. Many of the items
were found in the well that was uncovered the first day of the dig and
some were in surprisingly good shape, such as a stoneware jug and an
early soap dispenser.
