Dear Carol, and the rest of the list:

On Saturday, July 3, 1790, the Commissioners of the Land Office of the
State of New York, Governor George Clinton presiding, met in New York City.
They reviewed new surveys of twenty-five Military Townships and named the
townships with the catalog of classical and literary names that are so
characteristic of Central New York. The Commissioners then appointed Lewis
A. Scott and Robert Harpur to proceed with the drawing of ballots. From two
boxes, one containing over 2,000 names of veterans, and the other
containing numbers from one to one hundred designating lots in the
townships, names and numbers were drawn and matched. By this process,
which took the next six days, lots of 500 to 600 acres were randomly
assigned to the veterans of the four regiments of the New York Continental
Line.
