I suspected as much. The original line was indeed laid out on a north-south
axis (by Joseph Ellicott in 1798-1799) and, unlike Transit Road, at least
today, stretched from Lake Ontario to the Pennsylvania border.
It's one of those questions I figured every Niagara Frontier site online
would mention and no one seems to. Even an extensive biography on Ellicott
mentions neither the Line or the Road by name, at least in the index.
