Upstate films: There are a series of remarkable "Critical Cenema"
(sometimes called Avant Garde) films produced in Binhamton in the 1970s.
The most stunning is "Fog Line" by Larry Gottheim, an 11-minute shot of a
tree and field with no camera movement or panning. People either can't sit
through it or are changed so totally by it that they never look at trees or
other natural objects the same. Many of these films are in the landscape
tradition of the Hudson River painters--with a twist. For more details on
these, see Scott MacDonald's book: "A Critical Cinema: Interviews with
Independent Filmmakers," Berkeley: UCal Press, 1988.
