In reading Carol Halpert Schwartz' 1963 Dissertation titled "Retail Trade
Development in New York State in the 19th Century ..." she made use of what
she cited as _Peddlers Licenses for New York State_ in 4 vol.s 1840-1886.

Where can these be found - are they for NYCity? for all of NY State? I
have seen some of the laws governing peddlers activities and there seems to
be legislation on local and state levels - what sources are there that
would help identify peddlers?

I found 9 peddlers listed in the 1855 Census for the Town of Cazenovia (pop
about 4500)- is this typical? Are there any recent studies of the peddlers
of upstate NY? -what they sold, their sources, their customers, ...?
