Historic House Museum Resource Development Intern

Lower Hudson Conference is pleased to announce receipt of a Services to the Field grant from the Museum Program of the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) for 2008 and 2009, which will create a new part-time position of Historic House Museum Resource Development Intern to identify, develop and track historic house planning and preservation resources; to organize, produce and link dedicated house museum web pages on www.lowerhudsonconference.org, and a new electronic discussion forum to serve an audience of house museum staff, trustees and consultants.  
 
New web pages will contain presentations delivered at Practicum symposia and workshops (2007-08-09), resource reference materials such as sample interpretive plans, furnishing plans, historic structure reports; collections management, assessment and preservation policies, and a notebook of case studies, in an effort to serve the field, advance institutional planning and elevate individual professional skills among museum professionals in 21st century house museums.

These services will be provided to enhance the work of more than 150 house museums, historic houses, sites and societies throughout the greater Hudson Valley and  metropolitan region, who steward common collections, settings, interpretive themes and a diversity of community heritages.  A dedicated resource network will be provided for access statewide.
 
Intern Position Requirements:  B.A. required/graduate degree preferred in museum studies, art history, American Studies, material culture, communications design, conservation or historic preservation. Two years' experience w/BA or minimum 1 yr post-grad experience in historic house, historical society or museum, or practical project experience with collections management, preservation and/or web & on-line technology for educational or cultural organization required. The position requires facility & creativity with web and communications technology; independent research & analysis skills; clarity in writing/speaking; cooperative, collegial team member; some travel to historic house museums to attend professional workshops & programs, document evaluative data, and attend outcome-based evaluation training .

Positive, collegial, learning atmosphere, coupled with the opportunity to impact the museum & history field, and aid in the advancement of LHC. Grant-funded, part-time position at $18,000 salary + (limited) benefits; flexible work schedule, 24 hrs/wk x 50 wks, to begin late January, 2008.

The Historic House Museum Resource Development Intern will be hired early in the new year, in order to prepare for and participate in the spring 2008 and 2009 Historic House Museum Practicum symposia and workshops. This new position is additionally supported in part by grants from the Institute of Museum & Library Services (IMLS) and The Bay and Paul Foundation.
