Isn't it sad that there is no one designated State Historian.  That has been 
the case, off and on, for years in NYS.  It is as if maintaining history at 
the state level is unimportant.  Many Municipal historians are passionate 
about preserving their local history.  As a former Municipal Historian, I 
know there was no contact from any State Department that even let Municipal 
Historians know that they should submit an annual report or where to submit 
one.

Not many such reports are known to be on file still at the state level.  It 
is possible they were misfiled away somewhere and will mysteriously turn up 
some day (such things do happen at the state) or that they were discarded 
perhaps during one of the periods where there was no State Historian (like 
now).  There is some indication they had mostly disappeared prior to 1974.

It would be nice to turn up more of the older reports, particularly as the 
100-year mark approaches for the local historian law.
