Butterfield 8 represents the opening 3 digits of a telephone exchange that
would now be rendered 288. As late as the 1960s, exchanges were designated
with what might be thought of as prefixes that distinguished the locale in
which the telephone was located. The Butterfield exchange represented a ritzy
locale.
