Following message was prepared by Cara Janowsky of the New York State Library and is forwarded to NYHIST-L:

1930 Federal Census Microfilm

On April 1, 2002, the 1930 federal census was released. The New York State Library has ordered 1930 federal census microfilm for New York State. We expect to receive this microfilm sometime in May 2002. Once we receive this microfilm set and it has been processed, it will be housed in the Genealogy/Local History/Microforms area on the 7th floor.

The 1930 Census is available for viewing on microfilm at the National Archives Building in Washington, DC, and at the 13 NARA regional facilities. It is not available at the Presidential Libraries.

At this point in time, there is no name index for the 1930 census. No Soundex index of names was prepared for New York State.

For information on the 1930 federal census on microfilm, go to the National Archives website at http://1930census.archives.gov/beginSearch.asp. The information that is available on this site includes: what questions were asked by the census, which States had name indexes prepared, how to search those States and the ones without name indexes and where to view, rent, or buy the microfilm containing the original records.

On May 1, 2002, the New York State Library will be offering a one-hour class on using the 1930 census. The class will begin at 12:15 in the Librarian's Room on the 7th floor of the Cultural Education Center and will be presented by Jean Nudd, from the NARA regional facility in Pittsfield, MA. There is no charge for this program; because seating is limited, though, registration will be required. For more information or if you would like to register for this class, send an e-mail to [log in to unmask] or call Mary Woodward or Sharon Gavitt at (518) 474-2274.
