JOHNSTOWN — Area residents who attended an Aug. 24 lecture at a local
state historic site learned that “slavery is not just a southern
issue.”

Curator of the New York State Bureau of Historic Sites Travis Bowman
explained to dozens of attendees gathered at Johnson Hall that slavery
played a significant role in the colonial and revolutionary eras.

Bowman’s lecture, titled Slavery in the Mohawk Valley, examined how
slavery evolved under the Dutch, British and American systems of
government and how it was utilized in the region.
