Deputy Director
Archive and Library Services
The Center for Jewish History is one of the great Jewish historical and
cultural institutions in the world. The Center embodies a unique
partnership of five major institutions of Jewish scholarship, history,
and art. For more information about the Center, please visit

The Center seeks a Deputy Director of Archive & Library Services to
oversee the implementation of Web 2.0 technologies to further enhance
access to the collections and develop new services for our users.
The ideal candidate will be a dynamic archivist or a librarian with
archival training who is able to provide innovative leadership and a
commitment to implementing emerging technologies to serve users. This
position requires strong organizational and management ability, superior
communication skills, and the ability to develop and implement special
projects. There must also be a demonstrated ability to communicate and
interact effectively with diverse constituencies. The deputy director
will serve as a member of the Center’s senior management team.
Required Qualifications: Masters Degree in library science or history
with formal coursework in archival theory and management or the
equivalent. Fives years experience working in a research library or
archives. Experience using Web 2.0 tools and a commitment to using those
tools to better serve our users. Must be familiar with recent
developments pertaining to archival finding aids and the use of Encoded
Archival Description and XSLT stylesheets. Must be committed to public
access to collections and eager to develop new projects serving that
purpose. Must have good writing and verbal skills and be able to work
both independently and in a team setting.
Desirable Qualifications. Supervisory, project management, and grant
writing experience. Familiarity with ALEPH or another integrated library
system and DigiTool or a similar data management system. Familiarity
with the MARC, METS, Mods, XML, XMetaL, Oxygen, NoteTab, Java script and
proficiency with Word, Outlook, Excel and Access on a Windows platform.
Knowledge of Jewish history and culture. Bibliographic knowledge of one
or more of the languages frequently found in the collections: Yiddish,
Hebrew, German, Russian, or Polish.
Salary: Negotiable and commensurate with qualifications.
