TALK BY RUSSELL SHORTO

Author Russell Shorto will speak about The Island at the Center of the World: The Epic Story of Dutch Manhattan, the Forgotten Colony That Shaped America. Mr. Shorto will be joined by Dr. Charles Gehring of the New York State Library's New Netherland Project, which became the exciting "hub" of the author's research.

Excerpts from recent reviews:

"...a book that will permanently alter the way we regard our collective past." --Janet Maslin, New York Times

"...Shorto honors his sources. Charles Gehring, the professor who translated 12,000 fragile pages of 17th-century colonial records...is one of Shorto's heroic cast, toiling away inside the New York State Library in Albany, devoting his life to recovering the untold history of the founding Dutch settlers." --Lisa Jardine, The Times [London]
