09/03/2002   Borough of Manhattan Historian Wins Regents Award

ALBANY - The Board of Regents has selected Caledonia (Cal) Jones, Borough of Manhattan Historian, to receive the first annual New York State Local Historian of the Year Award for excellence in promoting and bringing to life the history of a region.

The award will be presented to Cal Jones at a Regents award luncheon at the State Education Department in Albany on October 3, 2002.

This award recognizes Mr. Jones for his leadership, commitment and
effectiveness in substantially increasing public knowledge of Manhattan's
rich history through a variety of initiatives.

These include the organization of a network of community historians who
collaboratively promote the documentation and active use of Manhattan's
diverse historical record, and an intergenerational program called
"Remembering the Past," which encourages families and friends of nursing
home residents to spend time together sharing family history stories.

The annual Archives Awards program recognizes outstanding efforts in
archives and records management work in New York State by a broad range of individuals and organizations.
