A newly-published listing of freeholders in Albany County in 1797 will be of interest for historical, biographical, and genealogical research: Arthur C. M. Kelly, transcriber and indexer, Book of the Freeholders 1797: Albany County, New York (Rhinebeck: Kinship, 2000), 41pp.

This work transcribes names of individuals residing in Albany County in 1797, filed in New York State Archives series J4011 Supreme Court of Judicature (Albany), Lists of freeholders qualified to serve as jurors, 1789-1821. Freeholders on the list resided in the three wards of the City of Albany as well as in Schenectady, Duanesborough (Duanesburgh), Freehold, Catskill, Coxsackie, Coeymans, Bethlehem, and Watervliet. (Note that some of these towns were part of what are now Schenectady or Greene Counties, then part of Albany County.) Occupations are given. The work is accompanied by an all-name index.

Book of the Freeholders 1797 . . . is available from Kinship, 305 Cedar Heights Road, Rhinebeck, NY 12572-2200; phone 914-876-4592 or 800-249-1109; e-mail [log in to unmask]
