> << Does anyone know of a list of the elevations of villages and towns in
New York State? >>

The Geographic Names Information System will give you this information for
ANY village or town. Go to
http://www-nmd.usgs.gov/www/gnis/gnisform.html and enter the name only, to
get every feature in America with that name; or you can get specific about
the state, or the type of feature. Click on the specific feature you want
for elevation information.  Not all features have elevation information;
populated places, summits, etc will show elevation.

There are 6205 "populated places" in New York; only 316 have population
over 5000. A "list" of them would be quite long [300+ pages]. You can
make your own list by using GNIS and just entering the state and feature
type, with no "feature name". Unfortunately, GNIS has a limit of 5000
listings, so you need a limiter, perhaps population, or elevation, or
county name. Also, the list you get does not "show" elevation; you need
to click a feature name in the list to get elevation.
