Interesting information on Transit Rd.  I am not sure when the transit
was actually invented but do know, from research, that surveying
instruments now in use were in use by the end of the 18th century except
for steel tape and solar compass.  They were, however, extremely crude.
Washington and Jefferson were skilled surveyers, of course.  In 1763
Anthony Wayne purchased a compass and chain after opening his surveying
office.  A plan of Vincent Township (Penna.) which he executed is still
in existence.
