350 years ago this month, in 1654 CE, 23 bedraggled Jewish refugees from
Recife, Brazil, arrived in New Amsterdam (now Manhattan Island) and asked to stay.
Since that time there has been an organized Jewish community on the North
American continent.

The Commission for Commemorating 350 Years of American Jewish History is a
collaborative project involving The Jacob Rader Marcus Center of the American
Jewish Archives, The American Jewish Historical Society, The Library of
Congress, and the National Archives & Records Administration. The Commission exists to
generate and support activities that will advance the understanding of the
American Jewish Experience as it marks this significant anniversary.

I hope this information is useful or, at least, interesting.
