The New York Correction History Society (NYCHS) has posted an 11-page special
section entitled "The Continuing C.O. George Motchan Story" on its web site
at http://www.correctionhistory.org

New York City Correction Officer George Motchan was slain during an escape 25
years ago by an inmate who had been in custody on a murder charge. Recaptured
on the day of Officer Motchan's funeral, the inmate was later tried,
convicted and at first sentenced to be executed under the state law mandating
capital punishment for the murder of an officer performing his or her duty.
As the result of a high court decision invaliding the mandatory aspect of
some capital punishment laws, the inmate death sentence was set aside. A
25-years-to-life term of incarceration was imposed instead. The inmate
became eligible to apply for parole this month.

While parole-related letters by the Motchan family, the Correction
Commissioner and the Correction Officers' union president are included, the
section's focus is not on the inmate's application. The focus is on the story
of the officer, his life and death, his family before and after, and the
remembrances of him, both personal and official. The parole issue is only the
latest development in that continuing story.
