There are currently 62 counties in New York State.  Five of these counties
are the vestigial counties that make up New York City, leaving 57 real
counties.  In addition, there were 4 counties that used to be in New York
State and are now part of Massachusetts and Vermont.  Thus, New York State
had 66 counties (5 + 57 + 4 = 66) between November 1, 1683 when the first 12
counties were organized and today.
