The Town of Hebron is located in Washington County, on the Vermont border,
a little north of Salem. It was created in 1786. Although the John Barber's
and Henry Howe's Historical Collections of the State of New York (1841 and
later editions) shows communities of Hebron, West Hebron, and North Hebron,
the modern DeLorme New York Gazette shows only West Hebron and North
Hebron.
According to Barber and Howe, the town of Salem was settled 1756 by two
religious congregations -- one from Scotland and Ireland, the other from
New England -- under the Irish Presbyterian Preacher Rev. Thomas Clark. It
seems probable that Hebron received its biblical name when both it and
Salem were raised to the category of towns in 1786; According to an 1860 NY
Gazetteer, Hebron was first settled after the Revolution, and a Ass. Ref.
Presbyterian Church under a Rev. Dr. Gray was established there as its
first church in 1780.
Washington County and local histories would probably provide more details.
