My maternal great-grandparents worshipped at the Roumanian-American Synagogue 
on Rivington Street on NYC's Lower East Side.  My maternal great-grandfather 
spoke 4 or 5 languages and was a translator for Teddy Roosevelt when TR spoke 
in the area.
